Whenever I see somebody under 50 driving a late-model Buick, I wonder who hurt them.

Here in Richmond, Virginia the public school year starts tomorrow. We had a lot of fun over the summer break, but I’m actually looking forward to the slightly more predictable schedule.

My dad would have been 65 today.

I don’t mourn his loss 16 years ago; he wasn’t great and only started trying to be a dad when I was in college, but I still think about him on his birthday.

A young hydrant, cut down before its time.

Silver fire hydrant, disconnected and on its side on the ground

A rare sighting of fire hydrant larvae preparing to leave the nest in search of new territory

Two stacks of fire hydrants with connecting pipes, each stack behind a traffic cone, on the side of a road

I live in a reasonably progressive, if gentrified, neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia. So imagine my surprise when the new neighbor moving in to the rental house across the street plops a sign in the yard for RFK Jr.’s presidential campaign 😳

My wife and I both work from home on Mondays with her in the office upstairs and myself on the sofa in the living room. It’s a silly thing, but whenever I hear her sneeze, I always like to yell out “Bless you!” across the entire dang house, and then she responds in kind with “Thank you!”

Tonight I hit my cycling mileage goal for the year: 5500 miles/8851 km. I’m on pace to surpass last year’s total (6500 miles/10461 km) in 5-6 weeks!

New set of Velocity Cliffhanger wheels just arrived with a dynamo up front. Wrapped them in some Ultradynamico Rose Robusto tires.

Now I just need to get to Saturday so I can ride on them outside instead of all this Zwift nonsense while it rains 😜

Pharmaceutical or EDM act?

Ask your doctor if LUNAX is right for you.

Olympics TV in my household is dominated by gymnastics and swimming, but this morning I got to watch Kristin Faulkner absolutely TEAR UP the last few kilometers of the women’s road race. What a gold medal finish! Her lead expanded the whole time between her breakaway and the finish line!

I swear to Xenu, people love to drop lunch hour calls on my schedule.

I just had 2 invitations for me to interview people over lunch on two separate days. “Hey, come work here! You’ll probably have lunch meetings most days because nobody cares enough to try finding a more appropriate time!”

Wishing everyone who leaves a rental scooter in front of a bike rack the most humiliating, public shart.

Finding myself in a position for, perhaps, the first time: I am both (I think) the most senior person remaining in my role at my job and also seems my employer is really anxious about keeping me around. There’s a LOT of turmoil at my employer, so I have mixed feelings about this.

Thing two: I, uh, crossed 5000 miles (8000+ km) for 2024 today 😮

Thing one: I watched Evil Dead II for the first time this week. Terrifically silly, not really my thing, but inventive and enjoyable while viewing.

Also, I kinda feel like Jim Carrey owes Bruce Campbell royalty checks.

First time I’ve seen a USB-C port in a hotel room (Fairfield Inn near Harrisburg, PA).

A combination outlet in a hotel with 2 USB-A, one USB-C, and two standard US electrical sockets.

Eyes dilated for the first time ever. Not a fan of the experience.

Peanut M&Ms are a fantastic bike snack.

Cheswick Park in Henrico was lovely to ride through on my bike this morning. A pretty small part of a long ride, but still pleasant.

Look, I’m not ignoring all the Supreme Shit from the Supreme Clown Court. I just gotta take the wins where I can, okay?

Coming home, even after a wonderful week at the beach, is always nice.

Nice to see another Reader’s Ride feature in The Radavist about a Richmonder, this time Braden from Outpost: theradavist.com/gt-tachyo…

To my great delight, I just introduced my wife to the old “Zendaya is Meechee” viral video.
